Artemis II Commander Reid Wiseman Shares Earth Photo After Mission Splashdown

NASA's Artemis II mission is planned as the first crewed flight of the Artemis program, testing the Orion spacecraft in lunar orbit. The mission will involve a four-member crew, including Commander Reid Wiseman, NASA pilot Victor Glover, NASA mission specialist Christina Koch, and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen, on a roughly 10-day journey launching from Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

It will mark the first crewed mission to the Moon since Apollo 17 in 1972.

Artemis II Cmdr. Reid Wiseman shared a breathtaking photo described as ‘impossibly beautiful,’ according to reports. This image, potentially of Earth from space, serves as a notable moment associated with the upcoming mission.

The Artemis II mission will involve orbiting the Moon without landing, verifying the spacecraft's systems for future human exploration. The crew will conduct scientific experiments, test life support systems, and evaluate the Orion capsule's performance during launch, transit, and reentry.

The U.S. Navy is expected to assist in retrieving the capsule and crew upon splashdown in the Pacific Ocean. The Artemis program aims to return humans to the Moon and establish a sustainable presence there as a step toward Mars missions. Artemis II will build on the uncrewed Artemis I test flight in 2022, confirming the Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft's capabilities with a human crew.

The mission's planning supports NASA's timeline for Artemis III, targeted for no earlier than 2026, which aims to include the first woman and person of color on the lunar surface. Post-mission activities will include medical evaluations for the crew at a NASA facility in Houston. The Orion capsule will undergo analysis to assess its condition after reentry.
