Assa Abloy eliminated most positions at Level Home and transferred assets to Kwikset. The parent company said the Level Lock platform will continue under its ownership with no impact on users.
The VergeAssa Abloy has laid off the majority of staff at Level Home and is folding the business into Kwikset, The Verge reported. Peter Boriskin, CTO for Assa Abloy North America, and Kimberly Cummins, head of North American HR, told employees their positions were eliminated effective immediately as part of a larger restructuring.
Level Home CEO John Martin and CTO Ken Goto are departing along with most of the engineering team.
A small number of employees remain to finish an upcoming product launch for multi-family lock management. The Verge obtained details from a person familiar with the restructuring who shared an audio recording of the meeting.
That source said Level Home serves hundreds of thousands of active users and warned that Assa Abloy may not be equipped to maintain the customer base. Assa Abloy confirmed the restructuring in a statement but said Level Home continues to operate as a business within the company.
Rebecca Samuel, director of communications and branding for America, wrote that the firm will continue to develop and sell the Level Lock platform and hardware and that customer support will not be affected.
The company’s most recent financial report showed declining sales in the North America residential segment. Any Level lock upgraded to Matter or added to Apple HomeKit can still perform basic functions locally, and all locks continue to work with a physical key.
