Athletics infielder Zack Gelof exits game in second inning with right-hand injury

Athletics infielder Zack Gelof left Tuesday night's game against the San Francisco Giants in the second inning after sustaining a right-hand injury during an awkward tag play at second base. The Athletics lost the game 3-1. Gelof's right hand was lacerated and bruised when Matt Chapman stepped on it while attempting to stretch an RBI single into a double.

The throw from left fielder Tyler Soderstrom reached the base four strides ahead of Chapman. Gelof took the one-hop throw on his knees and appeared to slip as he reached to apply the tag. Chapman's right foot struck Gelof's forearm before landing heel-first on the back of his hand, producing three visible spike punctures and blood.

Gelof immediately left the field in obvious pain. X-rays of the hand were negative and no stitches were required, manager Mark Kotsay said. 282 with 11 home runs and 29 RBIs.

"We're seeing a player that resembles the guy that came up and really excited us about [his] future," Kotsay said before the game. " ESPN reported the details of the play and injury.
