Atlanta Police Department Investigates Deputy Chief Over Judicial Conduct Report

A deputy chief in the Atlanta Police Department was identified in a judicial conduct report as the officer who had a relationship with a federal judge in the Northern District of Georgia. The report stated the encounters occurred in judicial chambers during business hours and were audible to court staff. Bloomberg Law reported the identification, citing a person familiar with the matter.

The Atlanta Police Department posted on its website that it had opened an investigation to determine whether the individual named in the Committee on Judicial Conduct and Disability report is an employee. The department statement did not name the officer or confirm any findings.

The judicial committee found the judge engaged in a secret extramarital relationship with a law enforcement officer in the district. The committee also cited attendance at a partisan political event and false statements to judges reviewing the conduct.

The judge received a private reprimand. The committee report did not name either individual, but Bloomberg Law identified the officer as a division commander who has served the department since 1998.
