Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone said he recently spoke with striker Julian Alvarez while visiting Argentina's national team training camp in the United States. Simeone stated he went to the camp to see his son and took the opportunity to ask Alvarez about his current form and ankle recovery. Alvarez told Simeone he felt one hundred percent fit and had regained match rhythm and intensity.
Simeone called Alvarez an extraordinary player and the best player at Atletico Madrid. He said the numbers show Alvarez generated important contributions within the team and gave Atletico an offensive hierarchy that is difficult to find. Simeone added that Alvarez has always behaved well as a person and professional and has worked for the team.
Simeone declined to comment when asked about reported links between Alvarez and Barcelona. Reports indicate Alvarez has accepted a five-year contract offer from Barcelona, but the club cannot meet a $171 million asking price raised by Real Madrid. Simeone said the situation will be resolved this summer.
