forbes.comAudio Technica launched its AT-MCD1 flagship iron-core moving-coil stereo cartridge at High End Vienna 2026 in Vienna, Austria. The cartridge is available now and priced at £9,999 or €11,000. The AT-MCD1 builds on more than six decades of Audio Technica engineering and craftsmanship.
It inherits the one-piece diamond cantilever and stylus construction of the earlier AT-MC2022 cartridge while refining the design for greater detail, speed, and smoothness. At the core of the AT-MCD1 is an integrated diamond cantilever and stylus tip engineered to transmit a record groove’s kinetic energy with minimal loss.
22 mm square diamond cantilever uses the material’s high transmission speed to enable fast attack and decay with clarity.
Audio Technica uses the Chemical Vapor Deposition method to create the synthetic diamond for the stylus. The company states that synthetic diamond created through CVD offers material characteristics equal to and in some respects exceeding those of natural diamonds. 08 mil curvature radius.
This refined profile enables the stylus to trace the most intricate groove modulations with more accuracy. The cartridge includes PCOCC coils for purer signal transmission, thick gold-plated terminal pins to reduce contact resistance, and threaded mounting holes that allow easier installation on integrated tonearms and compatible headshells.
It features high separation, wide response dual moving coils.
A hybrid structure combining titanium, aluminum and elastomer materials helps suppress resonances while maintaining structural integrity. Each AT-MCD1 housing receives mirror polishing by skilled craftsmen followed by an ion-plated finish that creates a deep black appearance. The AT-MCD1 is hand-finished in Japan.
Each unit is individually engraved with a serial number and delivered in a solid cherry wood case. com reported that Audio Technica claims vocals are “precisely focused, low frequencies are dense and controlled, and high frequencies are rendered with refinement and smoothness” due to the suppression of unwanted high-frequency resonance.
