Australia's parliament will adjourn at 5:30 pm on 23 June 2026 rather than its usual 8 pm close, Abc reported. The early finish permits members to attend the official opening of ANZAC Hall, part of the Australian War Memorial's $550 million extension project. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is scheduled to deliver the main address at the event.
Ben Roberts-Smith is also expected to attend after a Sydney court varied his bail conditions the previous week. Independent Senator David Pocock criticised the government's handling of a separate bill to reduce the capital gains tax discount and limit negative gearing. He said the two-day inquiry period was insufficient for proper review.
"It's farcical to think that you can look at a bill this size and actually get it right in two days," Pocock told ABC's AM. " Pocock added that lawmakers must ensure the legislation supports start-ups and retains capital in Australia. The government has already introduced carve-outs for small businesses following the brief inquiry.
