Barcelona recorded a maximum temperature of 40.7C on Wednesday, the highest reading in 112 years of records at the station. Some locations in Spain reached 44C the same day. Large parts of France are under orange extreme-heat warnings Thursday, with forecasts of 38C in Bordeaux and Perpignan, 37C in Nantes, and 35C in Paris. Northern Italy is expected to reach 36C in Florence and Bologna.
UK heat alerts and power warnings The UK Health Security Agency placed the East Midlands, West Midlands, East of England, London, South East, and South West under amber heat-health alerts until 9pm Sunday. The Met Office said temperatures could reach 36C on Thursday and Friday before easing gradually from Sunday night.
The National Energy System Operator issued a notice requesting additional power supplies for Thursday night, citing increased demand from air-conditioning and fans during the third heatwave of the year. An ambulance service in south-west England advised residents to check on people over 65, noting that older adults may have reduced perception of body temperature.
Officials said the current hot spell is likely to continue into next week.
