Battery Storage Facility Opens in Napanee, Ontario
A 250-megawatt battery energy storage system valued at $600 million began operations in Napanee, Ontario. The facility can supply electricity to up to 250,000 homes for four hours during peak demand.
One of Canada's largest battery storage facilities opened in Napanee, Ontario. The Napanee Battery Energy Storage System is valued at $600 million and can power up to 250,000 homes for four hours during peak demand periods. The site contains 284 battery units and transformer stations.
It stores electricity from nuclear facilities during low-demand periods and releases it into the grid when demand rises.
Energy and Mines Stephen Lecce said the facility provides power during peak demand by storing nuclear electricity at low cost. He added that the project will stabilize the grid and reduce costs for families in the region. Construction began roughly 18 months ago. The 250-megawatt facility ranks among the top three largest battery storage sites in Canada.
Patterson said the company installed on-site fire suppression systems and is working with local first responders. Greater Napanee Mayor Terry Richardson said the project makes the area more attractive for investment. Lecce stated the project meets requirements for affordability, safety, and grid reliability.
