Belgium to Transfer Entire F-16 Fleet to Ukraine by 2029

Belgium will transfer its complete fleet of 53 F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine by 2029, officials said. The country first committed to providing 30 of the aircraft before expanding the pledge to the full inventory. The move is expected to increase the number of modern fighter aircraft available to Ukrainian forces.

F-16s are capable of air-to-air combat and ground support missions. Delivery will occur over several years. The aircraft were originally acquired by Belgium as part of its air force modernization program. Transferring the entire fleet means Belgium will phase out the jets from its own inventory by the deadline.

The commitment significantly expands the number of F-16s Ukraine is set to receive from Western allies. Ukrainian pilots have undergone training on the aircraft in multiple NATO countries. The jets are viewed as an important addition for contesting control of airspace.

Integration of the F-16s into Ukraine's existing air defense network remains a work in progress. Belgium's decision aligns with similar pledges from other European nations. Several countries have announced plans to donate F-16s, though specific delivery timelines vary.

Ukraine continues to conduct air operations amid ongoing conflict with Russia. Both sides have reported losses of aircraft and air defense systems throughout the fighting.
