BETA Technologies Displays Unflown MV250 Hybrid-Electric Cargo Drone at Farnborough Airshow

BETA Technologies placed its MV250 hybrid-electric heavy-lift cargo drone on static display at the Farnborough International Airshow 2026 in England, where the aircraft built from all-flyable components made its first public appearance without having flown.

The MV250 is a military adaptation of the company’s Alia 250 eVTOL, which can carry five passengers or an equivalent cargo load plus the pilot. The uncrewed aircraft is designed primarily for cargo transport, with freight loaded and unloaded through an upward-opening nose visor.

It can also deploy air-launched effects from side-mounted launch tubes and serve as a forward tactical power source supplying up to 500 kilowatts. Specifications include a cabin volume of 250 cubic feet for a 2,000-pound payload, an operational radius of more than 250 nautical miles, a cruising speed above 170 knots, and a ferry endurance of 12 hours at 20,000 feet.

Four fixed-pitch propellers on long booms provide vertical lift while a single variable-pitch pusher propeller supplies forward thrust.

The turbogenerator, developed with GE Aerospace, runs on NATO-compatible fuels. Kyle Clark, founder and CEO of BETA Technologies, said the basic physics of the MV250 enable longer range, higher speed, and a lower cost of operations when compared to tiltrotor and legacy platforms. He added that the company should offer the military the most robust equipment to maintain superiority and deterrence.

Larry Smith of BETA Technologies said the company uses internal funding to build viable prototypes from commercial core technologies rather than waiting for external defense contracts. Clark noted that advanced composites integration reduced the wing from 14,000 fasteners and 580 parts to fewer than 300 parts and zero fasteners, cutting manufacturing time from six weeks to hours.
