South China Morning PostMicrosoft co-founder Bill Gates told the House Oversight Committee on Wednesday that meeting Jeffrey Epstein was a grave error in judgment. Gates said Epstein put his philanthropic work at risk and that he was never interested in a personal relationship with the convicted sex offender.
In prepared remarks, Gates stated he met Epstein in 2011 while seeking funding for global health work. He said the two held three meetings that year and two more in 2012 before contact ended in December 2014. Gates told lawmakers he never visited Epstein's island, ranch, or Florida home.
He added that he never witnessed or had any indication Epstein was engaged in ongoing criminal conduct. Comer said no one is accusing Gates of wrongdoing. Gates said he supports the release of all the Epstein files and hopes survivors can get justice.
Earlier sessions included former President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and Victoria's Secret CEO Les Wexner. The committee plans to interview investment banker Leon Black, Clinton aide Doug Band, and former Barclays CEO Jes Staley in coming weeks.
