Billy Ray Cyrus Says Sepsis Led to Vocal Paralysis Diagnosis in 2024
The country singer described a near-fatal sepsis episode that resulted in vocal paralysis and a hospital stay. He said he has since recovered and plans to release a new album on June 16.
Usa TodayBilly Ray Cyrus said a 2024 sepsis infection left him hospitalized and later diagnosed with vocal paralysis. The 64-year-old singer told People magazine in an interview published June 10 that the illness caused his body to swell and prompted medical staff to advise him to arrange his affairs.
"I don't know exactly how it evolved. It was my worst nightmare," Cyrus said. He added that his mother had died two years earlier on the same hospital floor.
Cyrus said Hurley urged him to appear on "The Masked Singer" as a challenge. He also recalled his grandson telling him to "try again," which he said motivated him to return to music. His new album, "The Hill," is scheduled for release June 16. Cyrus said he has been singing daily and feels positive about his voice.
Sepsis occurs when the immune system reacts improperly to an infection, potentially damaging healthy tissue and organs, according to the Cleveland Clinic and Mayo Clinic. If untreated, it can lead to organ failure or death.
