The Bureau of Land Management opened a 30-day public scoping period on Tuesday for a proposed December 2026 oil and gas lease sale covering 114 parcels and 126,744 acres of federal land in Colorado. The agency is accepting public input through July 9.

The parcels lie on lands the BLM manages and would carry stipulations to protect wildlife, cultural resources, and other sensitive areas if offered.

The agency manages roughly 245 million acres of public land nationwide and oversees approximately 700 million acres of federal subsurface mineral estate. Any parcels that advance would still require operators to submit detailed development plans, obtain permits, complete environmental reviews, and secure additional state and federal approvals before drilling could begin.

Lease sales serve as an early indicator of future activity in western states where federal acreage forms a significant share of production.

Com reported that the review occurs as the United States continues to address the largest global supply disruption in modern oil market history following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Federal leasing has drawn renewed attention from industry groups seeking to maintain future drilling inventories.

Historically, parcels are often modified, deferred, or removed after public comment and environmental analysis.

The BLM announcement marks the start of that process for the December 2026 sale.
