Blue Jackets defenseman Werenski says he will stay with team

Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski said Wednesday he intends to stay with the team and win a Stanley Cup in Columbus. Werenski, 28, made the statement after informing general manager Don Waddell that he was unlikely to sign another contract after the 2027-28 season. Waddell had explored trades, including one with the Dallas Stars that Werenski blocked using his no-movement clause.

I have had very open and honest dialogue since the season ended," Werenski said. " Waddell said he presented a trade that would have brought 24-year-old defenseman Thomas Harley to Columbus. "After some time and discussions with his family, Zach informed us that he didn't want to leave Columbus," Waddell said.

Werenski has played 10 seasons with the Blue Jackets, won the Norris Trophy this year, and helped the United States win Olympic gold earlier in 2026. The team has missed the playoffs for six straight seasons.
