Blue Jays Manager John Schneider Addresses Backup Catcher Brandon Valenzuela

The Toronto Blue Jays have a losing record this season after reaching extra innings of Game 7 in the World Series last year. The team added several veterans in the offseason but has struggled, particularly with its offense. In their most recent series, the Blue Jays were swept by the Tampa Bay Rays and scored just four runs across the three games.

Alejandro Kirk, the team's starting catcher and a reigning All-Star, has been sidelined with a fractured thumb. Backup catchers Tyler Heineman and Brandon Valenzuela have filled in during his absence. Valenzuela struggled in the series against the Rays, burning both ABS challenges early in one game and making a base-running error that resulted in him being thrown out at second base.

Manager John Schneider addressed Valenzuela's performance after the series. “To be an established major-league catcher, you’ve got to understand game plans,” Schneider said, according to the Toronto Star’s Mike Wilner. “You’ve got to understand where you’re setting up and you’ve got to understand game situations.

That’s the last box to check off. Going back the last couple of years, I talked about the same things with Kirk. ” The comments from Schneider indicated that Valenzuela is likely to return to Triple-A when Kirk is activated from the injured list. Heineman would then serve as the primary backup catcher at the major-league level.

Valenzuela is expected to get another opportunity in the majors later, provided he demonstrates improvement in game planning and pitcher management.

The Blue Jays' offense has been a primary issue this season, representing a reversal from the team's performance the previous year.
