A boat carrying 20 people capsized and sank near Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay on Tuesday afternoon, killing one person and leaving three others missing. City officials said three people were injured in the incident. One dog on board also died.
The vessel was a 50-foot multilevel cabin cruiser involved in a memorial service at the time. The emergency call came in just after 3:30 p.m. Tuesday when the boat was about 600 yards from the island, Lt.
Mariano Elias of the San Francisco Fire Department said. The vessel was believed to have launched near the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco. Sixteen people were rescued from the water and taken to Gashouse Cove Marina, ABC News reported.
San Francisco Fire Chief Dean Crispen said the vessel's motor was still running and leaking fuel when rescuers arrived. A captain of another boat who assisted described the waves as choppy. The average temperature of the bay in July is around 59 degrees Fahrenheit.
Search efforts involving divers, helicopters and vessels continued into Wednesday. By Tuesday evening authorities had expanded operations into the open ocean on the western side of the Golden Gate Bridge. US Coast Guard captain Jared S Toczko said rescuers have cumulatively scoured 950 sq nautical miles and will continue searching until sundown on Wednesday before ending rescue efforts.
