Bobby Cox, Hall of Fame Manager Who Led Braves Dynasty, Dies at 84

Bobby Cox, the Baseball Hall of Famer who built a dynasty with the Atlanta Braves, died Saturday at the age of 84, the team announced. The Braves described him as the best manager to ever wear the uniform. He led the franchise to 14 straight division titles from 1991 to 2005, five National League pennants and the 1995 World Series title, the team's first championship since moving to Atlanta in 1966.

Cox also managed the Toronto Blue Jays for four seasons, delivering the franchise's first winning record in 1983 and its first division title in 1985. In a 29-year managerial career he won more than 2,500 games and earned four Manager of the Year awards.

Cox ranks fourth all-time in managerial victories with 2,504 wins. Among the 13 managers with at least 2,000 career wins, only one reached the milestone in fewer games. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014. He holds the record for most ejections by a manager, a reflection of the fiery temper that often surfaced during arguments with umpires.

Yet those who played for him remembered a leader who connected personally with players and relentlessly supported them.

He returned to Atlanta in 1986 as general manager at the urging of then-owner Ted Turner. Cox's death came days after the passing of Ted Turner, who owned the Braves during much of his tenure. Georgia's governor issued a statement calling Cox a "true legend" whose management style built a legacy that would endure for generations.”

Players and baseball officials recalled Cox's ability to ease tension and build confidence. One former player described his first major-league lineup card appearance under Cox, saying the manager's casual greeting instantly calmed his nerves. Another remembered encountering Cox years later during spring training with his infant son; the joy on the Hall of Famer's face left a lasting impression unrelated to the game itself.

"A lot of how the game goes is already played out before the game," the player told reporters. "There’s meetings with pitching coaches, who’s available, who’s down, but the managers that can connect with you as a person, that’s what makes a great manager.

" The Braves said Cox's love for his family exceeded even his passion for baseball. The team offered condolences to his wife Pam and their children and grandchildren. Major League Baseball also paid tribute, posting a summary of his accomplishments that underscored his place among the sport's elite managers.
