Bobby Cox, Hall of Fame Manager Who Led Braves Dynasty, Dies at 84

Bobby Cox, the Baseball Hall of Famer who built a dynasty with the Atlanta Braves, died Saturday at the age of 84, the team announced. The Braves described him as the best manager to ever wear the uniform. He led the franchise to 14 straight division titles from 1991 to 2005, five National League pennants and the 1995 World Series title, the team's first championship since moving to Atlanta in 1966.

Cox also managed the Toronto Blue Jays for four seasons, delivering the franchise's first winning record in 1983 and its first division title in 1985. In a 29-year managerial career he won more than 2,500 games and earned four Manager of the Year awards.

Cox ranks fourth all-time in managerial victories with 2,504 wins. Among the 13 managers with at least 2,000 career wins, only one reached the milestone in fewer games. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2014. He holds the record for most ejections by a manager, a reflection of the fiery temper that often surfaced during arguments with umpires.

Yet those who played for him remembered a leader who connected personally with players and relentlessly supported them.

Cox's death came days after the passing of Ted Turner, who owned the Braves during much of his tenure.
