Boko Haram Attack Kills at Least 23 Chadian Soldiers in Lake Chad Region

Haram jihadists launched an overnight attack on a Chadian military base in the Lake Chad region, killing at least 23 soldiers and injuring 26 others. The assault occurred on Monday night on the island of Barka Tolorom, as stated by the Chadian armed forces in a Tuesday announcement.

The army repelled the attackers, with a significant number of the assailants killed during the clash. The Nigeria-based group has long operated around Lake Chad, which sits at the junction of Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria. This attack follows a pattern of increased violence in the area.

Recent months have seen a surge in operations by the group's JAS faction, involving kidnappings and strikes on army positions, particularly on islands and along Niger's shores. In response to the 2024 incident, a counteroffensive was launched and concluded in February 2025, after which the army declared that Boko Haram had no remaining sanctuaries on Chadian territory.

Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno addressed the latest attack in a Facebook post on Tuesday, vowing to continue the fight until the threat is eradicated and offering condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers. The president had previously promised to personally lead the earlier counteroffensive on the ground for two weeks.

Despite these efforts, attacks persist in the region.

Chad, a landlocked Central African nation, has endured years of instability through rebellions, armed groups and coups. Although the country possesses oil wealth, economic stagnation and a harsh climate contribute to its status among Africa's poorest nations.

The latest assault comes amid broader regional security challenges, including a recent surge in Boko Haram activities. Chadian forces have been targeted increasingly, highlighting ongoing vulnerabilities in border areas. No immediate claims of responsibility were reported in the sources, but the attack aligns with the group's established tactics in the region.
