Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca defeated Novak Djokovic 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5 in the third round of the French Open on Friday. The match lasted four hours and 53 minutes. Fonseca became the first teenager to beat Djokovic at a major tournament.

Match Details Djokovic won the first two sets.

Fonseca won the final three sets, including the fifth after trailing 3-1. Fonseca served three consecutive aces to close out the match. Djokovic had a break point in the final game but could not convert it. Temperatures reached 91 degrees Fahrenheit during the match.

Djokovic's loss leaves no men's Grand Slam winners remaining in the draw. The 39-year-old three-time French Open champion had reached the second week in 19 of his previous 22 appearances at Roland Garros. Fonseca will next face either Casper Ruud or Tommy Paul.

I just enjoyed being on court and what a pleasure it was. It's my first stepping on court against him.

Joao Fonseca, May 29, 2026 (ESPN)

Fonseca is one of two 19-year-olds who reached the second week. The other is Rafael Jodar, who has won 18 of 21 clay-court matches in 2026.
