British Columbia Premier David Eby arrived in China for his first trade mission focused on forestry products and liquefied natural gas development. Tariffs are "really hurting" the forestry sector and expressed hope that Chinese tariffs affecting B.C. seafood exports will be lifted. He received pre-trip briefings from the RCMP and the Canadian Security Intelligence Service to manage risks and opportunities.
The premier will meet PetroChina to discuss the second phase of the LNG facility expansion in Kitimat. Cbc reported that a final investment decision on the project is expected later in 2026. Eby described the PetroChina meeting as the "really big fish" of the trip.
The government withheld his full itinerary to prevent competitors in other provinces and countries from gaining an unfair advantage.
