British man sentenced to three-and-a-half years for one-punch killing in Canada

A British man who admitted killing a restaurant owner in a one-punch attack has been sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison after extradition from Scotland to Canada. The court in Ontario heard that the victim died in hospital a week after hitting his head on the pavement during the August 2023 assault.

The incident occurred outside a curry house in Owen Sound following an argument over an unpaid $150 bill.

Sentencing and time served The defendant, believed to be from Manchester, will complete the remaining seven months of the sentence before remaining in custody pending deportation to the United Kingdom. Two relatives who admitted being accessories were sentenced to time already served and have been deported.

The victim, a father of one originally from Bangladesh, was found in the street by a staff member and later died in hospital in London, Ontario.

Arrests and extradition The three men were arrested more than a year after the incident. Police Scotland took the defendant and his father into custody in Edinburgh, while the uncle was arrested in Dalkeith. Canadian media reported at the time that the three were in the country on holiday visas and left shortly after the altercation.
