Browns to Continue QB Competition Between Watson and Sanders After Minicamp
Coach Todd Monken said Tuesday he will not name a starter between Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders when mandatory minicamp ends Thursday.
usatoday.comCleveland Browns coach Todd Monken said Tuesday he is unlikely to name a starting quarterback between Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders when mandatory minicamp concludes Thursday. Monken spoke to reporters in Berea, Ohio. He said both quarterbacks have performed well enough to continue competing for the job.
"Once we get to the fall, we'll have to dissect the reps how we see fit," Monken said. "I just don't see it after the way Shedeur has played and Deshaun's played. " Watson and Sanders have split first-team practice reps throughout the offseason workout program.
On Tuesday, Sanders took all of the starting reps in 11-on-11 drills while Watson worked with the second-team offense. Monken said Watson will receive the first-team reps on Wednesday. The two quarterbacks will split the starting reps on Thursday.
"I would have hoped [to name a starter], but I like both of them," Monken said. " Monken noted that neither quarterback has separated from the other and that the team has not yet practiced against an opponent, put on pads, held a controlled scrimmage, or played preseason games. Monken is in his first season as an NFL head coach.
He has said throughout the offseason that he would prefer to enter training camp with a defined depth chart and a named starting quarterback.
