The BRVM ended the week of May 8 higher across all four of its equity indices. Trading volumes more than doubled from the prior week as investors focused on a small number of stocks that recorded sharp moves tied to company news. The composite index rose 0.5 percent to close at 404.59 points.

It has gained 17 percent since the beginning of the year. One stock climbed 21 percent even after the company reported a 6.1 billion FCFA loss for 2025. That result marked a swing from a 2.6 billion FCFA profit posted the year before. The stock's year-to-date gain reached 127 percent.

Another company that reported strong earnings for the year rose an additional 9 percent and ranked as the second most traded stock by value. Sonatel Senegal remained the most actively traded stock on the exchange. Several other stocks declined after their latest results.

One banking group fell 22 percent after it decided not to pay a dividend despite returning to profit. Two additional companies dropped 20 percent and 17 percent respectively, continuing recent weakness.

The fixed income segment saw its market capitalization increase 1.5 percent to 12,325 billion FCFA, equivalent to $22 billion. A Senegalese sovereign bond accounted for nearly 60 percent of the week's total bond transaction value. The higher trading volume recorded during the week serves as a liquidity signal for the exchange, which still handles a fraction of the daily volume seen in comparable emerging markets.

The performance leaves the BRVM among the better-performing exchanges in sub-Saharan Africa for 2026 so far, although gains remain concentrated in a limited number of stocks.
