Bungee jumper dies after fall from abandoned bridge in Brazil
A 21-year-old woman died after jumping from an abandoned bridge without a safety rope attached. An off-duty nurse reached her at the base of the structure and spoke with her before she died from her injuries.
nypost.comVideo of the incident circulated widely on social media. An off-duty nurse reached the woman at the base of the structure and spoke with her before she died from multiple injuries. The nurse told a Brazilian television network that she climbed down a steep slope using a single rope and was covered in mud by the time she reached the jumper.
Arrests and investigation Three bungee jump operators were arrested Sunday and charged with homicide with eventual intent. Police investigator Andrea Levy said the instructors acknowledged the woman had not been connected to safety ropes. Two of the men fled the scene and were later located with the assistance of military helicopters.
Three additional suspects were detained and later released without charge.
Government responsibility The bridge has been abandoned for years, and maintenance responsibility falls under the Brazilian Government. The City Hall of Limeira announced it would sue the Government to ensure proper management of the structure.
