BYD Offers Refunds or $1100 Compensation After Model Year Error

The Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD said it sold 2025-built vehicles to an estimated 1265 Australian customers as 2026 models. The company stated the error occurred because it used the dates the cars left the factory instead of the actual build dates. It apologized on Saturday and offered buyers either a full refund or $1100 compensation.

A public relations director for BYD in Australia said the discrepancy was an administrative error with no intent to deceive. The same statement noted that the build date does not affect compliance with Australian design rules, vehicle warranty, or performance.

The company said it will contact all affected customers by phone, email, and text to present the updated offer. Buyers who accept a refund may purchase another BYD vehicle if they choose.

Some owners told the ABC that the $1100 payment was inadequate and expressed concern that an earlier build date could lower resale value or raise insurance costs. One customer asked the manufacturer to replace his vehicle with a 2026 model. Car site Which Car reported that the mix-up involved only the model year listed in sales documentation, with no mechanical or specification differences between the vehicles.

The RACV said BYD is on track to become one of Australia's top three car brands in 2026. Assistant Minister for Competition Andrew Leigh told the ABC he supports stronger consumer guarantees and new penalties for suppliers that fail to meet obligations for repairs, replacements, or refunds.
