California State University System Renews OpenAI Contract for Three Years
The California State University system renewed a contract to provide ChatGPT Edu to students, faculty and staff. A survey of more than 94,000 respondents showed mixed views on the technology's effects.
NprThe California State University system renewed a three-year contract with OpenAI to supply ChatGPT Edu to its roughly 470,000 students and employees. The renewal adds $13 million per year after an initial $17 million no-bid agreement signed last year.
University leaders described the partnership as preparation for an AI-integrated workforce. Ed Clark, chief information officer for the CSU office of the chancellor, said the system selected OpenAI because it offered the most cost-effective way to reach more than a half-million users.
A later document advised officials to state that OpenAI was "uniquely positioned to meet our needs" after evaluating other vendors. AI tools will supplement coursework rather than replace instruction, Clark stated. Both the CSU and OpenAI said the technology supports career readiness and ethical use.
A fall survey drew more than 94,000 responses across all 22 campuses. More than half of students and about 60 percent of faculty and staff reported regular AI use for coursework or job tasks. Roughly 65 percent of students and 59 percent of faculty expressed skepticism that AI benefits education overall.
About 80 percent of students said they would not submit AI-generated work as their own. Large majorities of students and faculty cited concerns about effects on creativity, job security, and the environment. David Goldberg, an associate professor at San Diego State University and survey co-author, noted the results reflect only those who responded.
Martha Kenney, a professor at San Francisco State University, co-authored a petition urging the system not to renew the contract. She argued that generative AI carries environmental costs and may reduce educational value. Sejal Daterao, a 30-year-old master's student at California State University, Long Beach, said she uses the paid version for research and lecture summaries.
She added that the free version lacks features she finds useful for her studies.
