California voters on Tuesday cast ballots in five newly redrawn congressional districts created after the passage of Proposition 50 last year. The measure reconfigured district lines ahead of the midterm elections. Because the state counts mail ballots received after Election Day, final results were not available Wednesday afternoon.

Assemblyman James Gallagher won a special election to fill the seat left vacant by the late Rep. Doug LaMalfa. With 55 percent of precincts reporting, Gallagher secured enough votes to advance directly to the November general election. Gallagher will face former state Senate President Pro Tempore Mike McGuire in November.

The newly drawn boundaries place the seat in a more competitive position than the prior map.

In the redrawn 6th district, independent candidate Kevin Kiley led with Republican Michael Stansfield in second place and Democrat Richard Pan close behind as of 5 p.m. Eastern Wednesday. Kiley previously represented the 3rd district before switching his registration to no party preference.

Rep. David Valadao advanced to the November runoff in the 22nd district. The Democratic candidate who will join him has not yet been determined.

Rep. Ken Calvert won the primary in the 40th district against incumbent Rep. Young Kim. The second-place finisher has not been called, leaving open the possibility of two Republicans advancing.

Darrell Issa retired after the new map placed his residence outside the redrawn 48th district. Republican San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond secured an endorsement in the race to succeed him.
