The BbcThe Monte Carlo Masters, an ATP Masters 1000 clay-court tournament held annually in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France, began its 2024 edition on April 7. Britain's Cameron Norrie, ranked world number 24, faced Serbia's Miomir Kecmanovic, ranked world number 58, in the first round.
Norrie secured a three-set victory with a score of 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (7-0), marking his first match win at the event since 2019.
Norrie started strongly, winning the first set 6-2 after breaking Kecmanovic's serve twice. In the second set, Kecmanovic mounted a comeback, breaking Norrie's serve three times, including in his final two service games, to take the set 6-4. The match then proceeded to a third set, where both players held serve until Norrie reached 5-4 while serving for the match.
At 5-4 in the third set, Kecmanovic broke Norrie's serve to level the score at 5-5, forcing a tie-break. In the tie-break, Norrie won 7-0, securing the overall victory after two hours and 15 minutes on court. This win improves Norrie's head-to-head record against Kecmanovic to 2-1.
Norrie, aged 30, regained the British number one ranking in March after surpassing Jack Draper in the ATP rankings. The victory opens his 2024 clay-court season, a surface where he has reached the third round at Monte Carlo in previous years but has not advanced further since 2019. Kecmanovic, 24, entered the tournament as a qualifier and had won his qualifying matches prior to the main draw.
In the second round, Norrie will face Australia's Alex de Minaur, ranked world number six. The two players met last month at the Indian Wells Masters, where Norrie defeated de Minaur en route to the quarter-finals. De Minaur advanced to the second round after a straight-sets win over qualifier Pierre-Hugues Herbert.
The Monte Carlo Masters features 56 players in the main draw, with top seeds receiving byes into the second round. The tournament champion earns 1,000 ATP ranking points and serves as a key preparation event for the French Open, starting May 26. Norrie's performance could impact his ranking and seeding at Roland Garros, where clay-court proficiency is crucial for British players historically challenged on the surface.
