Canada defeated Qatar 6-0 on Thursday at BC Place in Vancouver. The match marked the first World Cup win for the Canadian men's national team. Canada took the lead inside 16 minutes when Cyle Larin converted a rebound. Jonathan David added three goals, including a first-half volley and a close-range finish before halftime.
Qatar played with ten men after Homam Ahmed received a red card in the 44th minute. Canada extended its lead in second-half stoppage time when David completed his hat trick.
Canadian midfielder Midfielder Ismaël Koné left the field on a stretcher after a challenge in the second half. Assim Madibo received a second yellow card and was sent off following the incident. Canada coach Jesse Marsch said the injury would be a significant loss for the team. Nathan Saliba replaced Koné and later held up his teammate's shirt during a goal celebration.
Canadian soccer Canada's Alphonso Davies watched from the sideline while managing a hamstring injury. Marsch said after the match that the result could help increase interest and develop pathways in Canadian soccer. The coach had earlier stated that David would continue to score goals in important matches.
