The draw places the game in a city that contains several thousand Bosnian residents. Community members described the March 31 qualifier, in which Bosnia-Herzegovina defeated Italy, as a moment of collective celebration.
Dzumhur, program manager at the Bosnian Islamic Association, said emotions at a Toronto mosque shifted from tension to relief once Bosnia-Herzegovina secured qualification. He noted that internal disagreements within the group gave way to shared embraces after the result.
Dzumhur added that the proximity of the match, roughly 15 kilometers from the mosque, amplified the significance for local residents.
Bosnian community began forming organizations in the 1980s. Institutions expanded in the 1990s as refugees arrived from the former Yugoslavia, with the mosque serving as a central gathering point. Mirza Durak, president of the Bosnian Cultural Association, said he traveled to Zenica for the Italy match and has since purchased tickets and arranged pre-match and post-match events.
He stated that supporters from across North America and parts of Europe plan to attend. Durak said the gatherings aim to display European-style match-day traditions to local residents.
