Canada Requests 16-Year Renewal of North American Trade Pact
Canada has formally asked the United States and Mexico to extend the USMCA trade agreement for another 16 years. The request comes ahead of a July deadline and as bilateral talks continue in Washington.
BBC NewsCanada has formally requested renewal of the USMCA trade agreement with the United States and Mexico for another 16 years. Canada-US Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc sent the notice of renewal on Tuesday, describing the pact as highly beneficial to all three countries.
Background to the request LeBlanc is in Washington for meetings with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. Negotiations with Canada have moved more slowly than those with Mexico. The two sides differ over sector-specific tariffs and automobile manufacturing rules.
Points of disagreement Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has called for removal or reduction of US tariffs on steel, aluminum, automobiles, and lumber. Greer has said Canada may need to accept some form of US tariffs. The United States has also raised concerns about Canadian limits on dairy imports and the removal of American liquor from store shelves in several provinces.
Greer has indicated interest in raising the required percentage of US content in North American-made vehicles. If the three countries do not agree to extend the pact by July 1, it would shift to annual renewal until 2036.
