Carlton Interim Coach Josh Fraser Alters Training Standards and Game Plan

Carlton has recorded lower average points conceded and fewer goals from defensive-50 entries since Josh Fraser became interim coach nine days before the reported training session. Content creator Terry Dehghani noted that such vocal instruction early in a session was uncommon under previous leadership.

Players have described an increase in on-field communication at training sessions. Fraser stated that recruits Will Hayward and Ben Ainsworth have contributed to louder group communication, an area identified by football boss Chris Davies after an earlier loss to North Melbourne.

Fraser said his development background leads him to stay involved during drills to monitor player thinking and maintain standards.

Carlton’s contested possession rate fell from 37.3 per cent in Michael Voss’s final five games to 32.8 per cent under Fraser. The team now ranks first in short kicks and uncontested marks. Defensive metrics improved from 12th and 14th to second and third for scores and goals conceded from entries into the defensive 50.

Overall points conceded dropped from an average of 101.3 to 67.2 across the measured periods.

Senior players Sam Walsh and George Hewett said the focus on the scoreboard during Voss’s final period had weighed on the group. Walsh described a shift toward solution-based play and retaining possession after regaining momentum. Jacob Weitering has played only twice under Fraser after straining his calf at training on Thursday and is expected to miss at least three more weeks.

Fraser has used recruits Ainsworth in the midfield and Hayward on the wing for periods. The Blues have not yet named a permanent senior coach.
