Public health officials in several states are investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella illnesses linked to contact with veiled chameleons. All five people who became ill are children two years old or younger, and two of them have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.

The investigation remains open as of May 7, 2026.

Officials stated that all sick individuals had contact with pet veiled chameleons. Veiled chameleons can carry Salmonella germs in their droppings even when appearing healthy, and the germs can spread to surfaces in their living areas.

Officials recommend washing hands thoroughly with soap and water after touching or feeding a chameleon or cleaning its enclosure. Children under five should not have contact with chameleons, and older children should wash their hands after any contact.

Chameleons should be kept out of kitchens and areas where food is prepared or eaten. Parents and caregivers are advised to change shirts between holding a chameleon and holding an infant. Supplies such as food containers and climbing branches should be cleaned outside the home when possible, or in a laundry sink or bathtub followed by thorough disinfection of the area.

Chameleons and other reptiles are not recommended for children under five, adults 65 and older, or people with weakened immune systems. If deciding against keeping a chameleon, owners should contact a reptile rescue, animal shelter, or pet store rather than releasing the animal outdoors.
