nypost.comThe Boston Celtics traded Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers on July 1, 2026, for Paul George, two first-round draft picks and two second-round draft picks. The deal ended a partnership in which Brown and Jayson Tatum led the Celtics to multiple Eastern Conference Finals appearances, two NBA Finals appearances and the 2024 NBA title.
Tatum posted a throwback photo and farewell message on his Instagram Story on July 3.
"9 years! Forever grateful for all that we accomplished together, for pushing me to be a better player," he wrote. "From first-round exits to winning a chip together, I'm thankful for it all. Nothing but love and respect for you as a player and as a person!
Looking forward to see how you attack this next chapter of your career and wish nothing but the best for you! " Brown addressed the trade during a Twitch livestream on July 2 and in a written statement posted across his social media channels. "There was definitely a message being sent, and that message was received," he said.
"I wasn't thrilled with the amount of respect that was shown during this process. I think there was a bit of a lack of respect. " Brown specifically named Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens.
"I wasn't thrilled [with] the way he facilitated some of the conversations, but I definitely think there's more to it," he said. "I just wish that the 'more to it' could have been explained to me because if the 'more to it' was explained, I think I would've understood. " Tatum missed a large portion of the 2025-26 season while recovering from a torn Achilles suffered in May 2025.
Brown averaged 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game, leading the Celtics to the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference. The team was eliminated by the 76ers in the first round of the 2026 NBA playoffs.
