Chase Utley Joins Dodgers as Special Assistant After Phillies Sought Role for Him

Chase Utley accepted a role as special assistant to president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Forbes reported. Utley played 13 seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies and four seasons with the Dodgers during his career. Utley participated in All-Star events in Philadelphia in July 2026.

The Phillies, who are in the National League playoff race during the second half of the 2026 season, had sought to create a position for him after he returned from a stint in Europe, Forbes reported. Utley instead chose the Dodgers position. He lives in the Los Angeles area, where he grew up and attended college.

Forbes reported that Utley cited geography and family considerations as the main factors. “I finished my career in Los Angeles,” Utley told The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Conor Smith. “I live in Los Angeles, and I wanted to still be around baseball, but still be around my family and not travel too much.

So it made sense just to get under their hood a little bit and understand what they’re doing. ” Utley added that his regard for Philadelphia remains unchanged. “I love Philadelphia and the Phillies organization,” he said.

Utley was a member of the Phillies’ 2008 World Series championship team.
