ForbesA Kailua-Kona chef won the Top Chef title after returning from Last Chance Kitchen, becoming only the fourth contestant in 23 seasons to achieve the feat. The chef is the only one of the four whose run included a competition record set before elimination. The chef won back-to-back individual elimination challenges at the start of the season before later elimination.
The chef beat three opponents in Last Chance Kitchen before facing another chef in a round requiring three single-bite courses in 45 minutes. The menu, rooted in California produce and Mediterranean techniques, earned a return to the main competition.
The finale took place at a Charlotte restaurant and featured a four-course progressive meal judged by a panel that included the head judge and Michelin-starred guest judges.
The chef built four courses around personal ground and closed with a Filipino stew dedicated to family. The chef joins three previous winners who returned from Last Chance Kitchen to claim the title. Fan reaction online split between those who viewed the chef as a deserving winner and those who felt other finalists had stronger cumulative work throughout the season.
