China imposed entry bans and transaction restrictions on Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr., his wife, and their adult son. Manila called the move an unfriendly act that complicates bilateral ties.

Officials added that the sanctions do not contribute to building mutual trust or creating conditions for constructive engagement between the two countries.
Teodoro said the sanctions reflect what China does to those who speak the truth against its deception. He stated he will continue performing his duties and uphold the nation in the face of actions he described as occurring at sea and elsewhere.
“Their own countrymen and the others under their control suffer far worse. I will just keep doing my duty and uphold our nation in the face of the wickedness they are committing here and even in our seas.”
Teodoro was appointed defense chief in June 2023 and has been among the most vocal Philippine officials on maritime disputes.

Teodoro has also criticized negotiations with Beijing, stating at the Shangri-La Dialogue in late May 2026 that such talks serve as a means for China to gain advantage rather than resolve conflicts.
