China Displays DF-17 Missile on State Television

Chinese state television showed video of the DF-17 ballistic missile for the first time in June, according to Defense News. The report said the missile has existed for at least 12 years and has been available to the military since 2019. " A CGTN video stated the missiles can operate without fixed launch sites and in any weather conditions.

News reported the DF-17 measures 11 meters long with a range of 1,800 to 2,500 kilometers. The missile carries a hypersonic glide vehicle that allows lower-altitude flight in unpredictable directions. A Center for Strategic and International Studies paper cited in the report said China possesses 1,300 such missiles and 300 launchers. The weapons can carry either conventional or nuclear payloads.

The broadcast occurred during the 2026 Rim of the Pacific maritime exercises near Hawaii and U.S.-Japan drills in late June. Alexander Huang, chairman of the Council of Strategic and Wargaming Studies in Taipei, said the timing appeared linked to those exercises.

Chen Yi-fan, assistant professor at Taiwan's Tamkang University, stated the display aimed to show the missiles could evade interception and conduct saturation strikes. M. Taylor Fravel, Security Studies Program Director at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, noted the glide vehicle's maneuverability makes the weapon harder to defeat than earlier ballistic missiles.
