China Holds Film Screening for Diplomats from 74 Embassies

The Chinese foreign ministry organized a special screening of the film Dear You on Monday for 150 foreign diplomats and their families, South China Morning Post reported. Diplomats from 74 embassies attended, including those representing Indonesia, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates and Peru. The movie was filmed in the Teochew dialect of Guangdong province’s Chaoshan region.

It follows a man who learns about his family’s hardships through remittance letters mailed from Thailand in the 1940s and addresses migration to Southeast Asia along with the Chinese diaspora’s efforts to maintain its heritage. Assistant Foreign Minister Hong Lei told attendees that the film illustrated ordinary Chinese people’s attachment to home and country.

“[I] hope that by watching this film, everyone can further enter the deep recesses of the Chinese people’s hearts and minds, and better understand China,” he said.
