The booster separated from the second stage and landed on a sea platform, according to the official Xinhua News Agency. The recovery marked the first time China retrieved a rocket's first stage. The launch took place from Hainan Island off the country's southern coast.

March rocket can carry up to 16,000 kilograms into low Earth orbit, Xinhua said. The Falcon 9 rocket can carry up to 22,800 kilograms into the same orbit, according to its operator's website. The Falcon rockets carry astronauts and supplies to the International Space Station.
