China's LineShine supercomputer takes first place on TOP500 list, displacing U.S. El Capitan system

China's LineShine supercomputer took the top position on the TOP500 list as of June 28. The machine displaced the U.S. El Capitan system from number one. LineShine sits at the National Supercomputing Center in Shenzhen.

It uses roughly 45,000 LX2 processors, each with 304 cores running at 1.55 GHz, linked by the LingQi high-speed network. The supercomputer became the first to surpass the 2,000 exaflop barrier. It runs 20 percent faster than El Capitan while drawing 42.2 megawatts of power.
