Chinese and Russian leaders hold talks after U.S. president visit

A Russian delegation arrived at Beijing Capital International Airport days after a U.S. presidential visit. The Russian side received standard protocol honors including a guard of honour and 21-gun salute. The visit marked the 25th anniversary of a friendship and co-operation treaty between Russia and China.

Officials released a joint statement of nearly 10,000 words that outlined new infrastructure projects.

Infrastructure and financial agreements The two sides agreed to build a new rail link between Zabaikalsk in Russia’s Far East and Manzhouli in China’s Inner Mongolia region. The project is expected to add nearly 50 additional pairs of freight trains each day once completed.

Russia later announced plans to sell 10-year government bonds denominated in Chinese yuan. No agreement was reached on the proposed Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline.

Broader cooperation The two countries also discussed expanded agricultural exports through joint grain terminals and food processing plants. Military cooperation details remain classified, though each side views the other as providing a stable strategic rear along their shared border.

Russian officials have allowed Chinese purchases of advanced fighter aircraft and missile defence systems. U.S. naval researchers have stated that Russian technology is assisting Chinese efforts to reduce submarine noise.
