Christopher Nolan Says Pre-Release Online Discussions About 'The Odyssey' Are Irrelevant

Christopher Nolan stated that online conversations about The Odyssey before its release are irrelevant because participants have not seen the film. Nolan made the remark in an interview with The Telegraph. He does not own a smartphone and receives information about such discussions through his network, according to Forbes.

The Odyssey had its London premiere July 6 at Odeon Luxe Leicester Square. Critics who viewed the film posted positive reactions on social media in the preceding week, with some describing it as Nolan's best work and others suggesting it could contend for Best Picture. Forbes reported that the film casts Lupita Nyong'o as Helen of Troy and Elliot Page as a young Greek warrior.
Online criticism has focused on the casting choices and on elements of costume design and dialogue. In a separate Channel 4 interview, Nolan said he sought to portray the ancient world as earthy and grounded rather than elevated by cultural assumptions. He told the LA Times that he wanted an earthy narrative and acknowledged it might draw criticism.
The film is scheduled for release one week from July 10. Forbes noted that Nolan has released only one movie since 2006 that earned less than $500 million at the box office.
