Gareth Damian Martin announced Signet City, a new role-playing game set in a monochrome city where players control a fungal parasite. The title is scheduled for release on PC via Steam later this year.
EngadgetCitizen Sleeper creator Gareth Damian Martin has revealed Signet City, described as a fungalpunk role-playing game. Players take the role of a parasite that moves through the social body of a dying city, shaping conversations and influencing inhabitants.
The game features stark monochrome visuals and a setting inspired by northern industrial cities in the United Kingdom during the 1980s. A trailer released after an early teaser in May shows mushroom-infested environments accompanied by music from the band SPRINTS.
"You are a parasite, in a city where strange technologies and radical ideas are taking root," the game's YouTube description states. " The project draws on themes from Martin's earlier works, including In Other Waters and the Citizen Sleeper series.
References to Anna Tsing's book The Mushroom at the End of the World appear in prior interviews about those titles.
City marks a shift for Martin, whose previous games were set in the distant future. The new title explores an alternate-reality setting informed by the United Kingdom's 1980s industrial cities. Eli Rainsberry is composing the soundtrack, replacing previous collaborator Amos Roddy, while Tom Kitchen assists with environmental art.
Art references include screentoned manga, pen-and-ink drawings, and black-and-white photography. Signet City will arrive on PC through Steam later this year. No information has been released about additional platforms.
