Claire's Closes 154 UK and Ireland Stores, Cuts 1,300 Jobs
Accessories retailer Claire's has shut down all its standalone stores in the UK and Ireland following financial difficulties, resulting in over 1,300 redundancies. Concession outlets and European operations remain open amid competition from online and physical rivals.
news.sky.comAccessories chain Claire's has closed all 154 of its standalone stores in the UK and Ireland, leading to more than 1,300 job losses. Administrators Kroll announced the shutdown effective April 27, 2026, after the company entered administration twice within a year.
Concession outlets, numbering 350, and stores in Europe will continue operating. The brand, recognized for its jewelry, bracelets, and ear piercing services, faced competition from online retailers such as Shein and Temu, as well as physical competitors like Primark and Superdrug.
previous owners, Modella Capital, attributed the administration to low Christmas trading in late 2025, which left the company in a vulnerable position. They also cited challenging conditions on the high street, including government policies that increased staffing costs and employer National Insurance contributions.
The company had entered administration in January 2026 and previously in August 2025, putting 2,150 jobs at risk in the earlier instance.
“As of 27 April, all Claire's standalone stores in UK and Ireland have ceased trading. She noted that teens increasingly rely on social media for shopping influences rather than local high streets or shopping centers. Retail analyst Catherine Shuttleworth said young shoppers, particularly Gen Alpha, have more spending options, including food and beverages like desserts, coffee, matcha, and bubble tea. She added that competition is intense for this demographic, who expect more interactive experiences from brands.”
The closure highlights difficulties for high street firms amid changing consumer behaviors and economic factors. Claire's struggled with evolving tastes that favor mainstream looks over the brand's traditional cutesy aesthetic. Administrators confirmed that all affected employees were notified of redundancy.
The company's bright purple branding and colorful shop fronts had been a staple for teen shoppers on weekends.
“We've moved away from novelty, colourful jewellery for the most part, which is what Claire's are best known for.”
The shutdown affects standalone locations only, preserving operations in concessions and Europe for now. Modella Capital described the high street environment as extremely challenging in January 2026 statements.
