Cleveland Browns Finish Minicamp Without Naming Starting Quarterback
The Browns completed their 10-week offseason program Thursday without naming a starting quarterback. Coach Todd Monken said both Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders will continue competing once pads are added.
upi.comThe Cleveland Browns concluded their offseason workout program Thursday with their third and final mandatory minicamp practice in Berea, Ohio. The 10-week session was conducted under first-year coach Todd Monken. Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders split first-team reps during OTAs and minicamp.
Watson looked healthy after an Achilles tear and a shoulder injury that required season-ending surgery in November 2023. He appeared more willing to push the ball downfield than in his last competitive action. Sanders showed improved poise, footwork, and processing as the spring progressed.
Monken said he wants to evaluate both quarterbacks in practices with pads on, a more lively pass rush, and possibly preseason games before naming a starter. "It would feel different if I didn't feel like their progression hadn't gotten to this point where I think they both can start and play winning football," Monken said. " The Browns drafted wide receivers KC Concepcion and Denzel Boston.
Second-year receiver Isaiah Bond added 15 pounds of muscle during the offseason. Bond and Boston were the most targeted wide receivers during OTAs and minicamp. "The way Denzel and KC have hit the ground running has been impressive.
And then [Bond], with him getting full offseason under his belt, it's been great to see," general manager Andrew Berry said. Monken stated the team has four offensive line starters in place: right tackle Tytus Howard, left guard Zion Johnson, interior offensive lineman Elgton Jenkins, and first-round left tackle Spencer Fano. The Browns believe Jenkins can play guard or center.
Cleveland spent the spring rotating several players at center and right guard with the starting unit. The offensive line was the top priority for the Browns in free agency. The starting unit will enter training camp with some continuity.
