Coinbase issued an AI-generated alert claiming Norway defeated Brazil 3-2 hours before the July 6 match began. The company said it corrected the error and updated its systems. The incident occurred as Coinbase expands prediction markets to U.S. users.
CoinDeskCoinbase sent users an AI-generated alert on July 6 stating that Norway's soccer team had defeated Brazil 3-2 in a World Cup knockout match. The alert, sent at 10:26 a.m. ET, claimed Erling Haaland scored twice at MetLife Stadium.
The match was not scheduled to begin until 4 p.m. ET. At the time, Coinbase's own prediction-market page listed the game as weather-delayed. The actual result was a 2-1 victory for Norway, with Haaland scoring twice.
Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong said he was investigating the incorrect alert with the team. Max Branzburg, the company's head of consumer and business products, stated that the incorrect story was fixed and that the firm made updates to avoid these types of inaccuracies in the future.
“It’s awesome to see the power of AI-enabled 24/7 insights for trading, but obviously still need to tune it to address these types of issues,” Branzburg wrote.
Coinbase rolled out prediction markets to U.S. users in January through Kalshi.
