Enrollment fell in college majors linked to occupations with high AI displacement risk during the 2025-26 academic year. Goldman Sachs analysts measured exposure using occupational data and AI risk scores.

They combined those occupational shares with AI displacement risk scores for over 300 occupations to calculate exposure levels for each major.
Computer science and statistics showed the highest AI displacement risk. Health and education majors recorded the lowest exposure.
Clearinghouse data covering 95 percent of U.S. degree-granting institutions showed no statistically significant link between AI risk and enrollment changes before the 2024-25 academic year. In 2025-26, enrollment fell more than 1 percent on average in high-risk majors.
Computer science and computer programming each declined over 10 percent. Enrollment rose about 3 percent on average in low-risk fields such as healthcare and engineering. The labor market for recent college graduates has softened since OpenAI introduced ChatGPT in November 2022.
