Colombian national sentenced to prison for voter fraud and stealing $400,000 in federal benefits under stolen identity
A Colombian woman who lived unlawfully in Boston for more than two decades using a stolen identity received a federal prison sentence for voter fraud, identity theft, and illegally collecting over $400,000 in Section 8, disability, and SNAP benefits. The case triggers mandatory immigration removal proceedings upon completion of her sentence and highlights vulnerabilities in federal benefits verification and voter registration systems.
thebogotapost.comBOSTON — A Colombian woman unlawfully residing in the United States was sentenced today in federal court in Boston for voter fraud, identity theft, and stealing more than $400,000 in federal benefits while living under a stolen identity for over 20 years, the Justice Department said.
The defendant illegally received more than $259,000 in Section 8 rental assistance from the Department of Housing and Urban Development, over $100,000 in disability benefits, and more than $40,000 in SNAP food assistance, according to the Justice Department.
She also applied for a U.S. passport, obtained a Massachusetts REAL ID, and secured eight additional Massachusetts identification cards using the stolen identity.
The sentence marks the conclusion of a prosecution that began with her arrest and shifts her status from fugitive alien to convicted felon serving time in federal prison. Upon release she faces mandatory deportation to Colombia under standard immigration enforcement rules that require removal of noncitizens convicted of aggravated felonies or crimes involving moral turpitude.
Downstream, the conviction requires the Social Security Administration and Massachusetts Department of Transitional Assistance to review and likely terminate any remaining benefits issued under the false identity. State election officials must now determine whether any ballots she cast in prior elections should be retroactively disqualified under Massachusetts law.
The case also obliges federal agencies to update their identity-matching protocols for passport issuance and REAL ID compliance to prevent similar long-term fraud.
This sentencing is part of ongoing Justice Department efforts to prosecute individuals who combine immigration violations with identity theft and public-benefits fraud. The department has brought similar cases in recent years involving stolen identities used to access federal housing, nutrition, and disability programs administered by HUD, the USDA, and the SSA.
The defendant lived in Boston throughout the period of the offenses.
